Also involved in students' research project supervision.
Research Scientific Officer (SO)
As SO at the MRC Unit The Gambia at LSHTM, (between 2017- 2023) I was involved in day-to-day laboratory and field operations, including training activities and procurement, to ensure the achievement of highly accurate results for diversed research projects. Specifically coordinated:
-
Routine molecular biology work including Nucleic acids extraction, analysis on agarose gel electrophoresis and PCR, and various genotyping assays.
-
Real-time and RT-qPCR for malaria parasite, bacteria and coronavirus lab analysis.
-
Various DNA sequencing activities including library preparation for ONT and NGS as well as Sangar sequencing for analysis of variance, drug resistance genotyping, etc.
-
Bacteria and Plasmodium falciparum cell and tissue culture/microscopy for diagnosis.
-
Data and result analysis, presentations at meetings, and involvement in academic writing.
-
Training new staff, student interns and short-term visitors and performing many other duties.

Undergraduate Research Internship experience at IITA 2014 -2015
I completed a six-month internship at the Virology/Molecular Diagnostics and Mycology/Pathology laboratories of the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) between August 2014 and February 2015. Here, I got my first hands-on experience on molecular diagnostic tools which heightened my interest in molecular genetics and diagnostics.
>Primary routine activities involved:
-
Isolation and characterization of Aspergillus species in media from soil and food crops samples, and storage for research purposes.
-
Extraction and purification of aflatoxins using partition chromatography method, utilizing principles, procedures and techniques in HPTLC for identification and characterization of aflatoxins; G1, G2, B1, B2.
-
Carried out analysis of aflatoxins and plant viral infections using ELISA techniques.
-
Actively involved in routine molecular biology work (DNA isolation, quality and quantity analysis using PCR and Gel Electrophoresis. Also, protein analysis using SDS-PAGE and Western blotting.
